F.A.Q.
Am I too old to start learning martial arts?
You are never too old to start a martial art. We offer classes suitable for all ages. You should select a Tai chi and Qi gong class rather than a Kung fu class according to your health and fitness level. Typically, people over 55 practice Tai chi, rather than Kung fu, although young people in good physical condition may choose Tai chi if their purpose is relaxation and stress management and if they prefer to work out their muscles with lighter exercises.
Do I need previous martial art experience to join the classes?
Classes are suitable for all levels. Beginners are welcome to join anytime. We provide individualized training.
How often do I need to train?
We suggest attending at least 2 classes per week but we understand that busy adults may only commit to once/week. If you are not from Eldora you may attend one class per week and train at home with the help of videos. Of course, in-person attendance is highly recommended.
When can I sign up?
Anytime; classes are ongoing (year-round) and your due date is on the day you sign up. If you sign up on the 18th, your due date will be on the 18th each month or every 3 months.
Do I need to wear a uniform?
We have a school uniform that includes black kung fu pants, a T-shirt with the school logo, and shoes. The school uniform is included in the 3 month payment. Adults buy their own shoes.
Do I need to purchase weapons?
Students are required to purchase their own weapons. Students are not required to learn weapons and can purchase a weapon when ready to do so.
Do you have belts/sashes?
No, we follow the traditional Chinese martial arts system. In China, sashes were used to prevent pants from falling off. Anyways, students may test every three-six months and receive a graded certificate. Tests help students focus on their progress and provide certificates of achievement which are especially important for those who may want to teach in the future.
Do you charge for tests?
The cost of sash tests is included in the tuition.
Is the tuition refundable?
The tuition is not refundable.
Can children with ADHD, Autism, and/or other learning disabilities learn martial arts?
Yes, we experienced great results with children with Autism, ADHD, and Down Syndrome. Jing Shifu has taught adapted martial art classes to children and adults. Studies show that martial arts help with mental discipline, social intelligence, focus and concentration, self-control, self-confidence, and aggressive behaviors.
Will I learn other styles besides the one that is taught in the class I attend?
Adults learn Mei Hua Quan and children learn Shaolin. Anyways, Jing Shifu shares techniques from various styles. Students will have chances to try other styles. Other styles will also be taught during occasional seminars. More advanced students will be able to learn forms from other styles during the weekly class.
